There are two factoring extremes: "Either one gets a large number of reuses with minuscule payoff (small general components) or small number of highly profitable reuses within an overly narrow domain (large specific components)." [Biggerstaff94] An optimal factoring maximizes both payoffs by encapsulating orthogonal features in components. In this way it is possible to build large components (with a high payoff for reuse) out of orthogonal components and still have the possibility of simply replacing features to cover a broader domain.
